Care for Non-Healing Wounds

Care for Non-Healing Wounds

Most wounds — any type of break in the skin — heal on their own with a bandage and a little patience, but those that don't heal normally require specialized and aggressive medical treatment. If a wound doesn’t improve after four weeks, or does not heal within eight weeks, it is considered a non-healing wound.

Non-healing wounds can be caused by a wide variety of conditions, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Circulatory problems
  • Traumatic injuries
  • Surgical incisions
  • Comprised skin grafts

Non-healing wounds can cause deeper skin erosion, infection and complications which can be damaging to organs and limbs, and even be life threatening — especially for those with diabetes and heart conditions.

Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center

Conveniently located in Henderson Hospital's Medical Office Building, the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center is an outpatient clinic operated in conjunction with Healogics™, the nation’s largest provider of advanced wound care services.

The specialists at the wound care center at Henderson Hospital are trained to evaluate and treat a variety of wounds on an outpatient basis, including:

  • Pressure sores (stages 1, 2, 3 and 4)
  • Ulcers (neuropathic, diabetic foot and others)
  • Surgical incisions
  • Venous stasis wounds
  • Burns
  • Ischemic wounds (these occur when there is poor blood flow in the legs)
  • Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) wounds

Typical treatments include removing unhealthy tissue, taking oral medication and applying topical solutions. The team provides evaluations for those who have been recommended for amputation. Wound care is a key component to limb loss prevention and in some cases, hyperbaric oxygen therapy can help prevent amputation.

Other therapies we offer include:

  • Debridement
  • Specialty dressings
  • Compression therapy
  • Growth factors
  • Bio-engineered tissue products
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a procedure in which patients breathe 100 percent oxygen at pressures two to three times greater than the atmosphere's normal pressure. This dissolves more oxygen in the patient's bloodstream.

Hyperbaric oxygen can be delivered in chambers made of clear acrylic that are filled with 100 percent oxygen. Hyperbaric oxygen treatments are normally painless and the average session lasts about two hours.

Conditions that respond most favorably to HBOT are bone infections that do not respond to standard treatment, crush injuries and reattachment of severed limbs, deep tissue injury from radiation therapy, peripheral artery disease and skin grafts or flaps that are not healing.

During HBOT, the patient's body absorbs 10 – 20 times more oxygen than it would normally absorb. This causes oxygen-rich blood to flow to the wound site, speeding the wound healing process. This leads to a number of benefits, including:

  • A decrease in localized swelling
  • The formation of new micro blood vessels
  • Increased protection against infection
  • Decreased effects from harmful or toxic substances in the body
  • Enhanced wound healing

HBOT is available Monday through Friday at the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center at Henderson Hospital. Sessions last about two hours and patients can listen to music, watch TV or take a nap while in the chamber.
