Henderson Hospital underwent a rigorous, unannounced on-site review in January 2020. During the visit, a team of Joint Commission reviewers evaluated compliance with stroke standards spanning several areas including: door to tPA within 60 minutes of arrival, order set usage, vital signs and neuro assessment completion with tPA administration. The Joint Commission also identified best practices in nursing education, bedside swallow screen and the EMS app for real time feedback for southern Nevada EMS professionals.
“Since opening, we have worked closely with our community EMS and emergency team to focus on the rapid diagnosis, treatment and intervention of patients experiencing a stroke,” said Sam Kaufman, CEO/Managing Director of Henderson Hospital. “Once patients have been diagnosed and treated, we provide intensive follow-up care, first in our stroke-designated patient care units with nursing and therapists, and then connecting them with acute rehabilitation or outpatient therapy to help them regain strength, coordination, stability and cognition.”
According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds (on average) and, as of 2017, stroke accounted for one of approximately every 19 deaths in the US. It remains a leading cause of disability in the United States as well.
The Joint Commission’s standards are developed in consultation with healthcare experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. They are informed by scientific literature and expert consensus to help healthcare organizations measure, assess and improve performance. The surveyors also conducted on-site observations and interviews.
“As a private accreditor, The Joint Commission surveys healthcare organizations to protect the public by identifying deficiencies in care and working with those organizations to correct them as quickly and sustainably as possible,” says Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, Chief Operating Officer, Accreditation and Certification Operations, and Chief Nursing Executive, The Joint Commission. “We commend Henderson Hospital for its continuous quality improvement efforts in patient safety and quality of care.”
